The two find the man's army medal in the woods and trace it back to the Institute, where mentally ill patients are kept, but there is no evidence that Dugan was ever there. They sneak inside and John witnesses patients being drugged to act as "remote viewers," seeing psychic things from a distance. John sees a blind patient, Michael, in color, playing "My Funny Valentine" and takes him outside — he has mixed senses and says he was told he suffers from a fatal brain disease (similar to John's history — see "The Mourner"). They took him and helped him develop his gift of seeing from a distance, along with other orphans and homeless people. They realize they are being watched by Sam...
